On October 1, 2026, Dr. Tien-Min Gabriel Chu was appointed Ralph W. Phillips Endowed Professor by the Indiana University Board of Trustees. The professorship, funded by colleagues and friends in memory of Dr. Ralph W. Phillips, a longtime leader in dental materials research at the Indiana University School of Dentistry, will augment Chu’s salary and fund equipment and supplies associated with his research.
“It is a tremendous honor to be named the Ralph W. Phillips Endowed Professor,” Chu said. “To carry the name of one of the most influential figures in dental materials research is both a gratifying personal recognition and a profound professional responsibility.”
Chu views the professorship as an opportunity to help shape the future of dental materials research and education at Indiana University. His vision includes facilities modernization, research innovation, greater collaboration between clinical and basic science researchers, and stronger integration of dental materials education with clinical disciplines.
According to Dean Carol Anne Murdoch-Kinch, Chu embodies the spirit and work of Phillips, a pioneer in dental materials science. Through collaborative research in dental materials and tissue engineering, as well as leadership in research development and faculty mentoring, Chu continues the tradition of innovation associated with Phillips' legacy.
“Dr. Chu is most deserving of this honor,” Murdoch-Kinch said. “As an accomplished materials scientist, he has been an instrumental leader in our faculty’s and students’ record achievements in research funding and impact. With this appointment, not only do we recognize Dr. Chu for his achievements and impact, but the funding associated with it will enable him to support additional research activities at the school.”
With these additional resources, Chu aspires to incorporate emerging technologies and novel materials into dental education, including artificial intelligence, digital workflows, and next-generation manufacturing. He also wants to create opportunities for IUSD researchers to translate new discoveries into education and clinical practice.
That tradition of excellence began with Phillips, who served the school for more than 50 years and helped establish Indiana University School of Dentistry as a global leader in dental materials research and education. During his tenure, he made more than 1,000 professional appearances and chaired more than 40 professional conferences. He also authored more than 300 scientific papers and books, including The Science of Dental Materials, one of the most widely used and translated textbooks in the field.
Chu says he is humbled to succeed recently retired Dr. Jeffrey Platt in the role and credits Murdoch-Kinch for her support, mentorship, and leadership, all of which have been instrumental in his professional growth and career achievements.
“I am deeply grateful for her encouragement and for the opportunities she has provided,” Chu added. “I look forward to building upon the legacy of excellence associated with this distinguished professorship and contributing to its continued impact for future generations.”
