The Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) populace gathered at the Madam Walker Legacy Center on August 29, 2026, to celebrate both the International Dentist Program (IDP) DDS class of 2028 and the DDS class of 2030 at the annual White Coat Ceremony. Surrounded and supported by loved ones and dental colleagues, students received their professional clinical wear, symbolizing the beginning of their dental careers and acceptance of the high standards and responsibilities of the profession.
This year’s speakers included Dean Murdoch-Kinch, DDS class of 2028 member and Student Leadership Board President Whitley Barkman, Indiana Dental Association President Dr. Lorraine Celis (DDS ’96), and President-elect of the Indiana Section of the American College of Dentists Dr. Mark MiHalo (DDS ’87). Drs. Odette Aguirre, Sopanis Cho, Danielle Messias, Scott Papineau, and Chandler Walker served as this year’s faculty coaters.
“You will remember this day—the moment you donned your white coat on this stage,” Murdoch-Kinch said. “It truly marks the first day of the rest of your life, in your transformation into a doctor. Today is the day you dedicate yourself to the public good and accept the responsibilities of excellence and ethical practice that come with becoming a Doctor of Dental Surgery.”
Barkman shared three points of emphasis to the DDS classes being honored: revel in the camaraderie of your classmates and take care of each other; immerse yourself in all available opportunities outside the classroom; and remember to enjoy your time here, no matter how difficult it can be.
Palvideet Kaur led the IDP class and Alex Kuklish led the DDS class in reciting their respective mission statements, crafted by students in their first few weeks at IUSD. Dean Murdoch-Kinch delivered brief closing remarks, and the White River Brass quintet closed out the ceremony.
